Each day 100's of pets go missing. A responsible owner will do everything they can to find their pet. The search does not always bring that pet home.  If you find a pet any vet will scan for a microchip at no cost to you to help locate the owner. Many are found and returned to their owner. Some are not. Some are found and kept by the person who found them. Some are actually stollen.  Keeping an animal  that is not yours is against the law. Eventually any animal will require a vet visit for various reasons. Currently it is not common practice for a vet to scan all new pets that are brought to them. It should be mandatory for all veterinarians to scan a new pet and check the microchip information to see if the animal is with it's rightful owner.  A recommendation that all Registered Animal Rescue's be required to be in possession of a Universal Scanner to ensure any animal that comes to their rescue is scanned first to determine if they are a lost pet and re-united with the owners.
