What would you do if your past was misunderstood?

 

What would you do if 15 million high school students every year were wrongly taught of your past?

 

What if the history of 85 million people is being denied?

 

This has been happening in the United States for over 10 years.

 

American high school students are learning the wrong things about the history of 85 million Koreans.

 

Errors about Korea are neglected in the World History textbooks of the SAT test, which is taken by 2.2 million people worldwide, and the World History textbook of the AP test, which is taken by 300,000 people every year in the United States.

 

The SAT World History textbooks published by Kaplan, Barron's and Princeton Review misrepresents the history and geography of Korea.

 

Typical errors are as follows: "The Tang dominated Korea.", "In the mid-seventh century, the Silla dynasty drove out the Han and controlled the entire Korean Peninsula."

 

Despite the existence of independent states on the Korean Peninsula, the maps of the Han Dynasty and the Mongolian Empire used in textbooks contain errors of including the Korean Peninsula on these maps.

 

Even in the most recent World History Prep textbook published in 2019, the first sentence that describes Korea is "The Allied victory over Japan in the Second World War brought an end to Japanese colonial rule over Korea, which had been formally established in 1910." And There is no explanation of Gojoseon ~ Korean Empire throughout the book.

 

Various errors are neglected in AP textbooks as well as SAT textbooks.

 

The AP World History textbooks published by Princeton Review, McGraw-Hill, and Barron's misrepresent the history of Korea for more than 10 years.

 

Typical errors are: "In 668, the Chinese withdrew from Korea in exchange for an arrangement that made the Silla vassals of the Tang and required them to pay tribute. After the Tang withdrew, the Silla united Korea.", "Under Emperor Xuanzong, the T'ang expanded Chinese territory into parts of Korea.", “Korea had its own independent and powerful dynasty, but in order to maintain the appearance of cordial relations with their powerful Chinese neighbors, the Koreans became a vassal-state of the T'ang.", "In 1876, Korea realized China was weak and declared its independence."

 

One textbook even states that Hangul, the unique characters of Korea, is derived from Chinese ideograms.

 

These examples are all obvious errors related to Korea that have been described as facts in SAT and AP textbooks for many years.

 

Although many errors about Korea have been neglected, they have not been corrected for years.

 

 

The history of Koreans in the United States began in earnest when Koreans moved to Hawaii in 1902.

 

As of 2020, about 2 million Korean Americans live in the United States.

 

Ever since Koreans began to settle in the United States, especially in the 21st century, Koreans have played a crucial role, the influence of Koreans is expanding, and more and more Americans are being interested in Korea and its culture.

 

However, if we continue to teach wrong information about the past of Koreans, it will have wrong effects on future generation Koreans.

 

In addition, the American society is a place where ethnic groups and races coexist and live in harmony.

 

In order for the harmony of the American society to be maintained well, understanding and respect for Korea and Koreans must be supported.

 

 

Furthermore, this is not just a matter of Korean's history.

 

This is a serious problem that can affect everyone involved in Korea.

 

If such biased and misleading statements about Korea in textbooks that are taught to American high school students and to students who want to go to college in the United States continue to be neglected in the future, it will result in terrible outcome to the identity of the Korean Americans of the future generation.

 

Moreover, it may harm the coexistence and mutual respect of many ethnic groups and races in American society, and may lead to misunderstandings about Korean Americans and their history.

 

There are limits for individuals to discover all the above numerous errors and to protest personally.

 

However, if Koreans, Koreans around the world, students who want to learn about Korea, students who want to go to college in the United States, and people around the world who are interested in Korea move through this Global Petition, we can change the wrong contents about Korea in the textbooks.

 

We believe that the College Board and SAT, AP publishers are responsible for the problems mentioned above.

 

We request that errors related to Korea be reviewed, verify facts based on reliable information, and errors to be actively corrected.

 

Please join the Global Petition for the revision of errors about Korea in the SAT and AP World History textbooks taught to high school students in the United States!

 

We call for the following changes:

 

 

First, the College Board, an accredited institution that reviews AP and issues SAT, thoroughly examine the contents related to Korea on SAT and AP World History textbooks, and correct any errors.

 

Second, the College Board, Barrons' Kaplan, Princeton Review, REA, and McGraw HIll, which publish SAT and AP textbooks, review overall source data on Korea, Korean history, and geography in each company's World History textbooks, and then check and fix the errors.

매년 1500만 명의 고등학생들이 당신의 역사에 대해 잘못 배우고 있다면 어떻게 하실 건가요?

 

8500만 명의 역사가 부정당하고 있다면 어떻게 하실 건가요?

 

이러한 일들이 미국에서 10년 넘게 자행되고 있습니다.

 

미국 고등학생들은 8500만 한인들의 역사에 대해 잘못된 내용을 배우고 있습니다.

 

전 세계적으로 매년 220만 명이 치르는 SAT 시험의 세계사 교과서와, 미국에서 매년 30만 명이 치르는 AP 시험의 세계사 교과서에 한국에 관한 오류가 방치되어 있습니다.

 

Kaplan, Barron's, Princeton Review에서 발행하는 SAT World History 교과서는 한국의 역사와 지리에 관해 잘못 서술하고 있습니다.

 

대표적인 오류는 다음과 같습니다. "당나라가 한국을 지배했다.”, “7세기 중반 신라 왕조는 한나라를 몰아내고 한반도를 지배했다.”

 

한반도에 버젓이 독립국들이 존재했음에도 불구하고 교과서에 사용된 한나라 지도와 몽골제국의 지도에는 한반도를 포함시키는 오류를 내포하고 있습니다.

 

심지어 2019년에 발행된 가장 최근의 World History Prep. 교과서에서는 한국에 대해 서술하는 첫 문장이 ‘1910년 일본의 식민지가 되고 난 후...’ 라고 설명하며, 책 전반에서 고조선~대한제국에 관한 설명이 전무합니다.

 

SAT 교과서뿐만 아니라 AP 교과서에서도 다양한 오류가 방치되어 있습니다.

 

Princeton Review, McGraw-Hill, Barron's에서 발행하는 AP World History 교과서에 10년 이상 한국의 역사에 대해 잘못 서술하고 있습니다.

 

대표적인 오류는 다음과 같습니다. "신라가 당의 속국이었으며 668년에 당이 철수하면서 신라가 한국을 통일시켰다.”, “당나라 현종(712-756) 때 당나라가 한국으로 확장되었다.”, “한국은 독립적이고 강한 왕조를 가지고 있었으나, 강한 이웃 국가 중국과의 친밀한 관계를 유지하기 위해 당의 속국이 되었다.”, “1876년 한국은 중국이 약해진 것을 인지하고 나서 독립을 선언하였다.”

 

심지어 한 교과서는 한국의 고유 문자인 한글이 중국의 표의문자로부터 유래되었다고 서술하고 있습니다.

 

이 사례들은 모두 수년째 SAT, AP 교과서에서 사실마냥 서술되어 있는 한국과 관련된 명백한 오류입니다.

 

이와 같이 한국에 관해 많은 오류가 방치되어 있음에도 불구하고 수년째 수정되지 않고 있습니다.

 

 

미국에서 한인들의 역사는 한국인들이 120년 전인 1902년에 하와이로 이주하면서 본격적으로 시작되었습니다.

 

2020년 기준 약 200만 명의 한인들이 미국에 거주하고 있습니다.

 

한인이 미국에 정착하기 시작한 이래 특히 21세기 미국에서 한인들은 중추적인 역할을 하고 있으며, 한인들의 영향력이 확장되고 있고, 갈수록 더 많은 미국인들이 한국과 한국의 문화에 대해 관심을 가지고 있습니다.

 

하지만 한인들의 과거에 대해 잘못된 내용을 지속적으로 가르친다면 미래 한인 세대들에도 잘못된 영향을 미칠 것입니다.

 

또한 미국 사회는 여러 민족과 인종이 공존하며 조화를 이루고 살아가는 곳입니다.

 

미국 사회의 조화가 잘 유지되기 위해서는 한국과 한인들에 대한 이해와 존중이 밑받침되어야 할 것입니다.

 

 

나아가 이는 한국인들만의 역사에 관한 문제가 아닙니다.

 

이 문제는 한국과 관련 있는 모든 이들에게 영향을 미칠 수 있는 심각한 문제입니다.

 

미국 고등학생들과 미국의 대학에 진학하고자 하는 학생들이 배우는 교과서에 이와 같이 한국에 관해 편향되고 잘못된 서술이 앞으로도 방치된다면 미래 세대 한인들의 정체성에 끔찍한 문제를 불러올 것입니다.

 

또한 미국 사회에서 여러 민족과 인종의 공존과 상호 존중에 해가 될 수 있고, 한인들과 그들의 역사에 대한 오해를 낳을 수도 있을 것입니다.

 

개개인이 위와 같이 수많은 오류들을 모두 발견하고, 그에 대해 개인적으로 항의하는 것에는 한계가 있습니다.

 

하지만 한국인들, 전 세계 한인들, 한국에 대해 배우고자 하는 학생들, 미국에서 대학에 진학하고자 하는 학생들, 한국에 관심 있는 세계인들이 이 글로벌 청원을 통해 움직인다면 한국에 관한 잘못된 내용을 바꿀 수 있습니다.

 

AP과목 공인 기관이며 SAT를 출제하는 칼리지보드와 SAT, AP 교과서 출판사들에 이 문제에 대한 책임이 있다고 봅니다.

 

한국과 관련된 오류를 검토하고 정확한 사실에 기반한 신뢰할 수 있는 정보를 확인 한 후 오류를 적극적으로 시정할 것을 요구합니다.

우리는 다음의 두 가지 변화를 요청합니다.

 

 

하나, AP를 전반적으로 심의하며, SAT를 출제하는 공인기관인 칼리지보드(College Board)는 철저하게 SAT와 AP 교과서 세계사 과목의 한국 관련 내용을 전반적으로 검토하고 오류를 시정하라.

 

하나, SAT 교과서와 AP 교과서를 출판하는 College Board, Barron's, Kaplan, Princeton Review, REA, McGraw Hill은 각 회사의 세계사 교과서에 한국과 한국의 역사, 지리에 대해 전반적으로 출처 자료를 검토한 후 오류를 확인하고 시정하라.
