Coles radio causes sensory overload to become worse. Please stop blaring it.
The issue
As a family with neurodiverse members, we understand the challenges that come with sensory overload. Our friends and loved ones often struggle to shop at Coles due to the overstimulation caused by noise, people, colours, beeps and talking. The addition of loud music and advertisements from Coles radio exacerbates this issue significantly.
The supermarket experience becomes so overwhelming that some of us would rather go without food than face the distressing environment at Coles. This is not just about discomfort - it's a matter of safety too. Overstimulation can lead to panic attacks, meltdowns and even physical injuries or car accidents due to heightened stress levels.
Research shows that 1 in 8 children have sensory processing disorder (SPD), which can make everyday environments feel unbearable (STAR Institute for SPD). With such a significant portion of our population affected by sensory sensitivities, it's crucial that businesses like Coles take action.
We urge Coles to consider implementing measures such as increasing designated quiet hours, especially on weekends and busy times. Additionally, reducing the volume of their in-store radio broadcasts. Or ultimately, cutting out advertisements and having only quiet calm music, if any at all. I would prefer zero radio. However. At the very least, any of these changes could greatly improve the shopping experience for neurodivergent individuals and their families.
Please sign this petition if you believe everyone deserves an accessible shopping environment free from unnecessary stressors.
