The Issue

Our little community planters along King Edward Quay in Hythe, Colchester CO2 8JB provide a much-needed positive visual impact and also serve as a safety barrier for visitors to our area. These planters are more than just decorative elements; they are vital for ensuring the safety and well-being of our boating community, especially given that they effectively delineate the space between the quayside and the river, preventing accidents and enhancing security for both residents and tourists.

Recently, Councillor Simon Ward (Interim) has demanded that the boat residents remove all items from the quayside, including the wood boxes that are crucial for heating our homes during the frigid winter months. This directive does not only compromise our safety and well-being but also disregards the efforts and resources that our community has invested in making the quay a welcoming and safe environment.

Without the planters and wood boxes, the ambience and functionality of King Edward Quay would greatly diminish, transforming this vibrant community hub into a barren and lifeless area. Moreover, the absence of these improvised fixtures might lead to higher risks of accidents, endangering both residents and visitors alike.

We acknowledge that there must be a balance between safety regulations and community needs. Therefore, we propose that, rather than removing these essential items, the council works with the boating community to find a compromise that maintains the character and safety of King Edward Quay. This could include regular maintenance checks, ensuring the planters are up to code, and possibly replacing them with officially sanctioned, yet similarly protective, community-driven solutions.

We urge the local council, including Councillor Simon Ward, to engage with our community, understand our needs, and help us preserve the essence of King Edward Quay. Sign this petition to demand the preservation of our community planters and collaborate towards practical solutions that benefit everyone in Colchester CO2 8JB.
