Think Blue, Go Green!
The Issue
Ocean pollution is a very serious problem in our society nowadays, and one that is not talked about enough, but before we discuss actions/movements to create change, let’s quickly discuss some general information & facts about ocean pollution. Our ocean is being flooded with two main types of pollution: chemicals and trash. Chemical contamination, or nutrient pollution, is concerning for health, environmental, and economic reasons. Littering, sewage, ocean mining, oil spills, agricultural runoff, toxic chemicals, are all major contributors to our oceans pollution. There are a striking 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean & 46,000 pieces in every square mileage of ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tonnes. Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans. It truly is a shame that so much trash enters our oceans when there are so many simple fixes. Lets now discuss a simple way that we can alter our day to day life to help the ocean!
Recycling properly. Although this may seem like a no-brainer, statistically speaking, 91% of plastic waste that ends up in our ocean is there because people don't recycle properly. So, here are a few things that people often get confused about.
Things to recycle:
1. Paper
2. Batteries
3. Plastics
4. Hazardous waste
Things to NOT recycle:
1. Garbage
2. Food waste
3. Food-tainted items (such as: used paper plates or boxes, plastic wraps paper towels, bottles and bags or paper napkins),
4. Packing peanuts and bubble wrap, plastic bags
5. Photographs
6. Polystyrene or Styrofoam
7. Hazardous chemicals and chemical containers
8. Plastic toys or sporting goods equipment
Garbage in the ocean comes from trash from trash cans, the streets, and landfills that get blown into sewers, rivers, or directly into the ocean. Trash travels through sewer pipes, into waterways, and finally into the ocean. This is why we recycle everything we can, just think about how everything that goes into the trash bins goes straight into the oceans.
Not only does this help sea life, but living beings on land as well, so I suggest that you sign this petition and send it around to spread awareness and create change. It's also homophobic if you don't because I say so- the gay member of the trio.
