Fix the unacceptable lack of student parking at Coastal Carolina University

The Issue

  •      The issue surrounding the lack of student parking is not solely an issue of convenience- it is an issue of students’ safety.
Students who cannot find parking are forced to walk long distances to their housing, oftentimes alone and without properly lit walkways and an adequate number of accessible call boxes. Students are targeted and followed simply for taking a spot before another car. Students are often cat called and intimidated on the long walk home from lot GG.
CCU does not offer a safe environment for students who work in the evening or must leave campus for any reason.
Coastal Carolina University is one of the only colleges of it’s size and status that does not offer a parking garage for students to arrive near their homes safely. If, however, a garage is not feasible due to issues with land, another option would be to turn lot HH in to student parking and/or a parking garage.
Lot HH is currently a faculty lot. At night, students who must walk from lot GG pass the completely empty HH lot, which is located closer to student housing.
Making lot HH accessible to students would bring CCU a step closer to creating a safe environment for all of it’s students. Lot GG could still be open to faculty and commuters; those who would not have to walk to and from their cars at night.
If Coastal Carolina University trusts students to safely walk from the GG lot, then it can trust the faculty to do the same.
Urge your school’s administration to take your safety and well-being in to account. Change will not happen unless we are heard.
