CMS use updated version of Powerschool

CMS use updated version of Powerschool
The Issue
Now that CMS has transitioned to some form of virtual learning, with some schools being completely virtual and others switching between in person instruction and online learning, students have had to use the online software they are provided with to complete their school work, most notably Canvas. However, because these applications are tied to Powerschool, the name that is entered for the students is their legal name. This can create danger for trans students in CMS, as it forces them to out themselves as trans when they ask to be called a name that doesn't match their assigned gender. In some situations, this can lead to bullying or harassment. Having students use applications that still use their legal name and gender can create feelings anxiety and dysphoria. Especially with some assignments (on Canvas), such as ones that involve students to discuss their thoughts and then reply to their classmates, trans students will often rather take a 0 for an assignment than have their legal name (often referred to as a "deadname") be revealed to their teachers and classmates. As a trans student, I tend to avoid certain assignments or showing up to certain meetings if I know that I will have my deadname revealed, which leads to my grades dropping as I am not completing the work. I ask that CMS use an updated version of Powerschool that allows students to enter their preferred name and gender, and an updated version of Canvas that allows students to choose their pronouns.
