Student arrival times to school are too early.

Student arrival times to school are too early.

The Issue

High-school and Middle-school students ages 11-18 are waking up at 4-6 AM in Montgomery County. To get a normal amount of sleep, they have to go to sleep at 8 PM at LEAST. This is an insanely early time to have to sleep and wake up. Sleep deprivation can create discourse in a student's life, a common cause for depression and sleeping during class.

These schools are supposed to be preparing you for full time jobs. According to CBS news, after conducting a survey, workers generally have to be at the office at least by 8:48 AM. Northwest High-school students have to arrive by 7:10 AM. That's an entire hour and a half earlier. Even worse, New Providence middle school students have to be off of the bus and getting breakfast by 6:55 AM. You can't get breakfast there if you are late at 7:10.

An easy google search can tell you how bad sleep deprivation can be for a developing and learning mind. There are hundreds of reliable articles citing many symptoms of struggling for students in sleep deprivation. Symptoms relating to depression, sleeping in class, exhaustion, loss of interest, etc.

I am a high school student at Northwest High. I have experienced these symptoms first hand, the first and foremost being depression. I cannot stay in the school for more than an hour before one of my peers tells me they are tired/exhausted from how little sleep they could get. Having this so early in the morning can make it a chore for many children to even roll out of bed in the morning. 60% of the school year, the sun isn't even up when we're on the bus. There are times where many kids at a time have a hard time paying attention to the content (including myself) because they can't even stay awake. I took a small survey between myself and my peers, and 60% felt they couldn't learn easily because of how tired they were.
