CLYDE'S LAW - Petition to Limit the Sale and Use of Fireworks

We, the undersigned, call upon the government to introduce protective measures to limit the sale and use of fireworks in the interest of public safety, animal welfare, and mental health.

Our Proposal:

Restrict the sale of fireworks to licensed holders only and for the purpose of paid public displays and to licensed festivals , celebrations etc..
Limit the use of fireworks to the evening of November 5th (Guy Fawkes Night) and during a restricted period between 11:00 PM on New Year’s Eve and 12:30 AM on New Year’s Day

The Issue: Fireworks, while enjoyed by some, cause significant distress to many individuals, animals, and wildlife.

I speak from personal experience as a loving pet owner to a Romanian rescue dog named Clyde, who is a gentle, sweet, and a very laid-back companion. However, when fireworks are let off, his demeanour changes drastically.

The fear and distress he experiences during fireworks displays is heartbreaking and deeply troubling. I am terrified that his anxiety could cause him serious harm, such as a heart attack and despite medication , den's and many other ways to alleviate his distress , this has not helped.

This past firework night , they started 1 week prior to November 5th 2024 and continued 6 days after the event in our area alone.

Sadly, this is not an isolated issue. Many animals—domestic pets, farm animals, and wildlife—suffer similar levels of distress during fireworks displays and sadly , some lose their lives.

The sudden, loud noises can result in panic, disorientation, and even injury. This distress is often compounded by the dangers of fireworks themselves, such as fires, accidents, and unintended harm to both animals and humans.

Additionally, fireworks impact individuals with mental health conditions, including those with learning difficulties, autism, anxiety disorders, and PTSD.

For these individuals, the loud noises and flashing lights can trigger episodes of intense anxiety, fear, and trauma, which significantly affect their well-being.

Why We Need Change: It is clear that the effects of fireworks on so many people and animals are far-reaching.

The distress caused is unnecessary and avoidable. We urge the government to take action to create an environment that prioritises the safety and mental health of all citizens, animals, and wildlife.

By restricting fireworks to licensed displays and ensuring they are used only during limited hours, we can:

Significantly reduce harm to animals, especially pets like Clyde, who are caught in the chaos of unexpected fireworks.
Protect people with mental health conditions, disabilities, and anxiety, who are affected by the loud noises.
Safeguard wildlife, livestock, and the environment, which can be adversely impacted by fireworks.
Promote a safer and more considerate approach to celebrating public events.

We ask for the government to listen to the concerns of the people and enact meaningful legislation to ensure that the use of fireworks is safe, respectful, and considerate of all citizens and creatures.

Please sign this petition to show your support for a safer, quieter, and more compassionate approach to fireworks in our communities.

Sincerely,
Miss Michelle Swainston
