The Issue

Clothes do not commit crimes, people do. Shifting blame to fabric is easier than facing the truth about violence and power. If outrage rises faster at a skirt than at a predator, priorities need fixing. The focus should always be on the one who chose harm, not the one who got hurt.

Society spends an agonizing amount of time trying to teach women how to avoid being assaulted, instead of focusing that energy on stopping abusers. The framing has to change.

Babies get raped. Elderly women get raped. Women dressed modestly get raped. Women in hijabs get raped. Nuns get raped. Women in jeans, tracksuits, pyjamas, school uniforms, work uniforms get raped. There is no outfit that prevents rape and no outfit that invites it.

If you are more comfortable analysing a woman’s clothing than condemning a rapist, you are part of the problem.
