Closure of Smithtown Schools on April 8th, 2024 due to Solar Eclipse

The Issue

Petition for the closure of school due to the
Solar Eclipse
We, the students, parents, and concerned community members are signing this petition to ask the school administration to use an emergency (snow) day to have a day off for the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the Smithtown Central School District.
1. Safety Concerns: A solar eclipse causes detrimental risks to unprotected eyes, especially for children and those who do not understand the dangers. While this will cause a delay in education, the safety of students, faculty, and bus drivers must be of the greatest importance.
2. Health Concerns: During an eclipse direct exposure to the sun could lead to permanent eye damage, including blindness. Even with the early release it still poses a serious threat to bus drivers who would be driving during the eclipse, they could get stuck finishing routes during the peak of the eclipse.
3. Parental Concerns: Many parents have already expressed that they will not be sending their children to school for safety. As a community, we must address these valid concerns for the safety of our children.
4. Several school districts across New York State have decided to close during the solar eclipse, with Sachem being one of them, for the safety of their students. By also closing, our school district is demonstrating its dedication to the wellbeing of its students.
In conclusion, we are urging the school administration to prioritize student, faculty, and bus drivers safety by closing the schools during the solar eclipse. The closing will ensure everyone is protected from risks that are imposed.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
