Close The Research Gap

Close The Research Gap
The Issue
The Issue:
Women’s health has been overlooked, underfunded, and under-researched for decades. From 1977 to 1993, women of “childbearing potential” were omitted from clinical studies, and today, we’re still shouldering the ramifications: From commonly used medications that were dosed according to men, to the dire maternal mortality rate in the U.S., to years-long diagnosis times, to a profound and systemic lack of understanding about how our bodies work.
Even now:
- From 2013 to 2023, just 8.8% of National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant spending was allocated to the study of women's health. This proportion has decreased, even as overall budgets have increased. (source)
- As of 2015, there were five times more scientific studies on erectile dysfunction than premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Erectile dysfunction impacts about 18% of men, while up to 90% of women experience PMS symptoms. (source)
- A 2021 study showed that in 75% of cases where a disease impacts one gender, the research funding patterns favor men. (source)
- Women are expected to spend 25% more of their lives in poor health, relative to men. (source)
- Black women are 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than any other demographic. (source)
The Call to Action:
The fight for equitable research funding isn't a partisan issue—it's something we can all agree on, something all American women need.
We're calling on the new Congress to prioritize women's health: through programs that prioritize federal funding for key research initiatives, as well as prenatal access and maternal equity.
Sign our petition to tell lawmakers that funding women's health should never be up for debate.
