We, the residents of Lakeview and Port Credit, call on governments in the area to Close the Harm Reduction Center at 427 Lakeshore Rd E, Mississauga, Ontario and stop providing services that enable drug users and dealers coming into our neighbourhood. We, our children and the many other citizens that visit the parks and beaches in the area are suffering from the increase in drug and alcohol related incidents invited into our neighborhood by the Harm Reduction Center.
Some recent examples include:
- Fights and loud disruptions on the grounds of the Adamson Estate
Fires and disruptions on the beach at the mouth of Cooksville Creek, fire department called numerous times - A documented incident of a prowler lurking on porches and peeking in windows in the middle of the night. This occurred during the week leading up to Monday, October 7, 2024. Police were called and he was arrested where he self-identified as “from Compass.”
- Bag of drugs found in the playground at St. James elementary school
- People using needles in the playground of St James elementary school as early as 5pm on school days
- Encampment forming in RK McMillan park, possibly also Adamson estate
- A man was found unconscious in the ditch on Beechwood Ave in front of a home with young children, police were called.
- People were found squatting in a home under construction on Beechwood Ave, police were called
- People walking around the streets and park under the influence of alcohol or drugs and being belligerent
- Petty thefts from yards; e.g. wheelbarrow, trimmer
- Attempts to break into vehicles on driveways
This list is representative, but far from complete. There have been too many such incidents to offer a complete catalog.
To be clear, the residents have no issue with the Compass food bank (many of us volunteer there). The issue is with the harm reduction center that attracts drug users and dealers to the area.
