Close The Gap Act: Require full doors and attendants in public unisex changing rooms

The Issue

My name is Alana Ciancio, and I am a 17-year-old girl living in a northern suburb of Chicago. On Tuesday, June 24th, my friend and I were victims of voyeurism. We were recorded while trying on clothes in the changing room at a store in the mall. A man placed a paper bag with a strategically made hole in it, allowing his phone camera to poke through, in front of the door. Once I realized I was being filmed, I swiftly grabbed the phone, which confirmed my suspicions that it was recording me and my friend. I pressed pause to see multiple other videos taken that looked identical to mine. I took a deep breath and ran out of the changing room. I ran to an employee screaming, "He's taking video of us in the locker rooms!"(I was too disoriented to come up with the word "changing rooms"). I then feel him grab me from behind and wrestle me for the phone for some time, throwing me to the ground and into walls. After a while, he got his phone back and ran away.

This isn't just about me, it's also about all the other young women who were recorded in those changing rooms one day. All of the people who have experienced this before, and the people to whom this still poses a threat. All of the wives, sisters, women, and friends who have and could fall victim to voyeurism, all because stores are being negligent. We MUST form a law forcing stores to take more care when it comes to changing rooms. It is necessary to have full-length doors and trained attendants, preventing cases like this in the future.
