The Issue

I'm a student in Solihull, and the recent heatwaves have made it increasingly challenging to concentrate in class. Sitting in a classroom when it's over 30 degrees Celsius outside feels unbearable and makes it incredibly difficult for both students and teachers to perform at their best. It's just too hot to efficiently learn.

When classroom temperatures soar, it doesn't just impact comfort; it directly affects our ability to focus, retain information, and engage in learning activities. Research has consistently shown that high temperatures can reduce learning outcomes. According to Stanford University researchers, for every degree Celsius increase in temperature, there's a measurable decline in cognitive function.

Many schools across Europe have established guidelines to close or adapt school days when temperatures become extreme, recognizing the importance of student health and well-being. It's time for Solihull schools to implement a similar policy. This is not just a matter of comfort but of educational efficacy and safety. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heat stress and other related health issues, especially for young students whose bodies are still developing.

We propose that when temperatures exceed a set threshold (e.g. 30 degrees Celsius), Solihull school should close to prioritise the health and safety of their students, and should it go over a separate threshold students should be allowed to wear games kit by default.

This won't lead to a lack of productivity, we can work in the comfort of our homes improving productivity.

By taking proactive measures, we can ensure a better, more conducive learning environment for all students in Solihull. We urge the local education authorities and school administrations to prioritize our health and learning by adopting a policy that responds to extreme heat conditions.

Sign this petition to support a healthier learning environment for all students in Solihull. Together, we can make a change that respects both educational needs and climatic realities.
