Close schools or allow excused absences in San Francisco to slow Coronavirus COVID-19
The Issue
First, no need to fear - let's focus on taking action to slow down COVID-19! It is totally doable IF WE ACT FAST! Slow the spread until we have a vaccine!
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading. The proliferation is following exactly the same path as it did in China, South Korea, Japan, and Italy. Despite massive containment efforts, no government has been successful in stopping it. New cases are still growing exponentially in outbreak areas. Schools are hotbeds for virus transmission, and countries around the world have shut down schools nationally to slow the proliferation and protect children and communities. We want SFUSD to TAKE ACTION to protect children, families, teachers, staff, healthcare workers, frontline workers, and all US citizens!
We are petitioning to ask the San Francisco Unified School District, SFUSD superintendent, and SFUSD Board to allow voluntary excused absences or close SF schools altogether to slow the COVID-19 proliferation, and to use remote teaching and online options to continue student learning.
COVID-19 is transmissible even from people without symptoms. Community transmission of COVID-19 is showing up in nearly every nearby community. If the same pattern plaguing China, South Korea, Japan, and Washington state starts here, the virus would not be able to be slowed and would overwhelm our healthcare system. Data points from every outbreak location have shown that the virus cannot be stopped once it's taken root in the community. COVID-19 is already here. Let's at least try to slow it down.
The COVID-19 outbreak had already taken 3,490+ lives and infected 102,000+ people around the world. The number of deaths and infections recorded in our area are increasing DAILY. SFUSD had not taken enough action to keep our community safe since our last petition, while the global situation has continued to worsen. Since we started our first petition on Feb. 4, the number of deaths had grown 690% and the number of infected 424% despite massive containment efforts from ALL governments concerned. Sign this petition and fight to protect our kids, our families, and our elders before it's too late!
