The Issue

Imagine spending all of Christmas Day preparing and cooking festive dinner, only to finally sit down after 5pm. While others are relaxing, you're already dreading the next day, knowing you have to be at work early on Boxing Day. This is the reality for many of us who work in retail, where enjoying the holidays with family and friends is overshadowed by the obligation to work on December 26th. This unique feeling of not being able to truly embrace the joy of the season because the looming responsibility of work tarnishes our holiday spirits.

Retail workers deserve a break. They tirelessly serve the public throughout the year, bearing the brunt during the holiday period when shopping mania peaks. The significance of retail employees being able to enjoy both Christmas Day and Boxing Day with their loved ones cannot be underestimated. This small adjustment could lead to happier, more motivated employees who return to work refreshed and ready for the busy sales day on December 27th.

Statistically, over 3 million people work in retail across the UK, many of whom are required to work on Boxing Day. According to a report by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW), retail workers are among the most stressed during the holiday season. The added pressure of being unable to fully participate in holiday celebrations only worsens their stress and affects their mental health. Allowing employees a two-day break during this significant time of year is not only a matter of fairness, but also of well-being.

There are practical benefits to this proposal as well. By delaying the start of sales to December 27th, retailers can experience a single, concentrated rush, potentially increasing revenue and reducing the operational chaos that often accompanies staggered sales days. Moreover, this change would not only benefit employees but also appeal to consumers who can plan their shopping effectively, enjoying a more relaxed and enjoyable Christmas.

This is a call to action for policymakers, retail executives, and communities to advocate for closing retail stores on Boxing Day. Let's allow retail workers to experience the full flavor of the festive period. Please add your name to support this campaign for a balanced, healthy, and joyous holiday season for everyone involved.
