Close Miami Dade Public Schools on October 8th through 10th Due to Hurricane Milton

The Issue

As a resident of Miami, I live under constant threat of hurricanes, with their destructive power and insidious unpredictability. Recalling the recent devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene in Tallahassee, where my cousins live, brings the danger home. It was a chilling reminder that even a storm not hitting directly can cause significant disarray, and pose serious risk to the community.

On October 8th through October 10th, Hurricane Milton is expected to bring 35 mph winds and heavy rainfall to Miami. Even without a direct hit, these conditions can lead to hazardous situations in our community, particularly on the roads. Miami Dade Public Schools should remain closed in the face of such impending environmental threats.

Each year, schools close for a variety of reasons, from public holidays to heavy rain. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that public schools in the U.S. are closed an average of 29 days per year, inclusive of summer breaks and weekends. An extra day, to ensure the safety of our children, is not an unreasonable request.

We must prioritize the safety of our young students over maintaining regular school hours in unforeseen circumstances like this. The potential danger that Hurricane Milton poses to our school commuting children is not a risk we should be willing to take. Let us make the prudent choice for our children; let us put safety first. Please sign this petition, urging to close Miami Dade Public Schools on October 8th through October 10th because of Hurricane Milton.
