La Jolla Cove is more than just a beautiful beach for us to visit; it is a vital habitat for seals and sea lions, creatures who rely on these beaches to rest, give birth, and raise their pups. While we have numerous other locations to enjoy the beach and the ocean, the wildlife at La Jolla Cove simply cannot survive without this specific environment. This reality hits home when we witness the reckless behaviors of some visitors who IGNORE warnings and disturb the wildlife, as exemplified by a troubling incident on 7/23/26 where a young man was filmed KICKING a sea lion. 

The consequences of such disturbances are particularly grave during pupping season. Small disruptions can lead to the separation of mothers from their pups, a situation that endangers the lives of the vulnerable young. It tears at our hearts to consider such preventable tragedies, yet they are happening because human enjoyment is prioritized over wildlife safety.

We must make a stand for these animals who have no voice. The simplest and most effective way to protect them is by closing La Jolla Cove, or at the very least, severely restricting access during critical times like pupping season. This action will ensure that seals and sea lions have the necessary peace and space to thrive without the threat of human interference.

Understanding the importance of this action requires us to collectively acknowledge the role of La Jolla Cove as a wildlife sanctuary rather than a tourist destination. By closing it off or at least LIMITING ACCESS, we are prioritizing the ecological balance and embracing our responsibility to cohabit this planet harmoniously with other species.
