Improve Hoboken PATH service by closing it for repairs

Improve Hoboken PATH service by closing it for repairs
The Issue
The image above is the result of overcrowding at 33rd St and the PATH line because of track issues at Hoboken station.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has launched a $430 million investment program, known as PATH Forward, to upgrade the 117-year-old PATH system. This two-year initiative focuses on improving speed, reliability, and the overall passenger experience on one of the nation's busiest rapid transit systems. The PATH Forward program encompasses a series of projects including comprehensive track repair and replacement, modernization of bridges, railcars and other critical infrastructure, and rehabilitation of four major stations; Hoboken, Grove St., Newport, and Exchange Place. With work completion expected in early 2026, the goal is to enhance system resilience and efficiency, reducing delays and ensuring smoother travel for thousands of daily riders.
The info I presented earlier were pulled straight from PANYNJ's website about their initiative, PATH Forward. You can find full info here: https://www.panynj.gov/path/en/path-forward.html The program promised to reduce delays, ensure smoother travel, and everything positive, except the obvious maintenance you'd see at said stations. Our station at focus is Hoboken; this is more than just a station, this is a commuter haven, this station connects maybe thousands of travelers daily to NJ Transit (NJT) service, whether it's the light rail, or heavy rail, the station terminals NJT and PATH, with 3 routes total. (2 weekdays, 1 weekends) Earlier this year (2025), PATH closed Hoboken station from Jan. 30 to Feb. 25, to further complete their promise on the PATH Forward program, which involved repairing 4,500 feet of tracks, replacing their switch / interlocking system, and other aesthetic details. During this period, commuters could take shuttles to Newport and Exchange Place PATH stations, take the NJT light rail (where one of its terminals is Hoboken Terminal) to either Newport (1 stop away) or Exchange Place (4 stops away) to connect to PATH, where on weekdays they would run WTC-33rd service which stopped at Newport. Commuters could ALSO utilize $3 ferries, free buses, and free light rail rides, which will continue to prove my point; another closure of Hoboken station is feasible, and will be beneficial.
Obviously the question presents itself: "Why?" Over the course of a weekend, Hoboken station suffered what could only be described as a catastrophic meltdown. On Jul. 12, 2025, signal/switch issues were reported at Hoboken (which was revealed to truly be a derailment), and the crew was on the way to fix the issues. Yes, the same switches that took nearly a month to replace and upgrade. These weren't just the regular delays on the system, though; they stemmed for over 10 hours, up to the point that PATH finally caved in and suspended all 33rd St / JSQ service, making the NWK - WTC line the only operable line in the system. (not even they were free of delays, but I won't get into that).
On Jul. 13, 2025, there were track issues; yes, the tracks that also took nearly a month to get repaired. These, again, were not short delays, and it took 15 hours for regular service to resume.
Need I say much more? Hoboken station is a disaster, and it's melting and unfolding right before our eyes, and action needs to be taken IMMEDIATELY. This just can't be stressed enough; PATH's reputation is dying quickly, and the backlash is flowing in. They are letting thousands of riders down everyday, with the mere amenity of cross honoring, with many riders saying that cross honors aren't even accepted when they try. PANYNJ needs to stand up, take one single look, and realize that service is not what it used to be.
The struggle of another Hoboken closure will be existent, but as previously described, riders can walk to the HBLR terminal at Hoboken and take it to either Newport or Exchange Place to connect to PATH services.
Please, sign this petition and not just benefit yourself, but thousands more riders everyday, suffering from these delays as a result of botched repairs.
And if that just isn't enough, here's the data sourced from the PATH X/Twitter, where they publish service alerts.
In the past 173 days, there have been over 280 delays or interruptions. There have been SEVEN track fires in the past 7 months. There have been over 220 elevator outages in the past 177 days.
(7/25/25: I'd like to thank @PathBackwards on Twitter/X for this data; I did not retrieve it myself. I should have thanked them earlier, but it is better late than never.)
Let me make it even more simpler; THERE ARE MORE DELAYS THAN DAYS.
Please, shift your attention to this matter, help yourself, and help so many more PATH riders entering dismay as a result of the terrible work PATH has done.
