The Issue

Living in Forsyth County, I have personally witnessed the challenges that cold weather brings. An important concern lies with our elderly community members who kindly volunteer to drive children to school. Their safety is paramount, and I can't imagine the risk they may face braving icy roads in frigid temperatures, especially on a predicted cold Tuesday.

Meteorological reports from trustworthy sources indicate a drastic drop in temperature, with expectations of dangerous wind chills hitting the county. The National Weather Service has issued advisories, warning of frostbite risks within minutes if precautions aren't taken. Such conditions make it unsafe for students walking to school or waiting at bus stops in the early hours where temperatures could easily fall below freezing.

Other districts with similar scenarios have opted to close schools during extreme cold waves. For example, in January, nearby districts pre-emptively closed schools when temperatures were forecasted to fall below recognized safe levels for school operation. Taking similar measures in Forsyth County aligns us with a precedent of prioritizing student safety over academic schedules.

We urge the Forsyth County School Board to consider these safety concerns seriously. While education is undeniably vital, so too is the well-being of our students, teachers, and the wider community who assist in daily school commutes.

Please sign this petition to urge the closure of Forsyth County schools on Tuesday for the safety of students, staff, and our cherished community members who brave these harsh conditions to provide volunteer transportation.
