Close borders for Ontario Minor Hockey
The Issue
Growing up, my son was passionate about hockey. From the time he learned how to skate, he dreamed of playing for his local team, representing his community, and forming lifelong friendships with teammates from his home center. However, the current open border policy in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) is slowly draining that passion and the same dreams for many young athletes like him.
The open border policy allows players from outside a local team's designated zone to try out and join teams, often displacing local players. This has created an environment where competition is fierce and, frankly, unfair for local kids. My son, along with many other children, faces overwhelming competition against players who have the option to play for multiple teams, leading to a discouraging atmosphere during tryouts. More often than not, our kids find themselves sitting on the sidelines for no fault of their own. Hockey should be an inclusive sport that builds local community spirit and camaraderie, but the current policy is turning it into a cutthroat competition.
Reverting to closed borders, as it once was, is a necessary step. This would ensure that local teams truly represent their community, fostering a sense of belonging and pride among young players. By closing the borders, we allow homegrown talent to thrive, reducing misplacement despair and restoring the love for a sport many children cherish.
Statistics reveal that participation in minor hockey is declining. According to OMHA data, recruitment rates in local teams have seen a 15% drop over the past five years. Financial constraints and pressure from extended travel for tryouts contribute heavily to this decline. By reinstating closed borders, we can alleviate some of these burdens by keeping costs low and reducing unnecessary travel.
Let us not overlook the mental health impacts as well. The constant stress of tryouts, rejection, and the feeling of inadequacy takes a toll on young minds. Our kids deserve a chance to enjoy hockey without the added stress and pressure that open borders introduce.
We urgently call on the Ontario Minor Hockey Association to eliminate the open border policy and bring back the traditional structure where children play for their home centers. This change will not only restore fairness but also reinvent the spirit of community hockey.
Let’s reignite our children's love for the game and build a better future for local hockey. Sign this petition and join us in advocating for closed borders within the OMHA.
