We, the undersigned residents, property owners, business owners and supporters of the communities of Árchez, Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida and the wider Axarquía, call upon the Ayuntamiento de Árchez to immediately secure and close the Punto Limpio until it can be demonstrated that it no longer presents a risk to public safety.
Why We Are Launching This Petition
Before launching this petition, we have written formally to the Mayoress of Árchez, with copies sent to the PSOE councillors, setting out our concerns and requesting a written response by 10 August 2026.
In that letter, we ask the Ayuntamiento to:
- Immediately secure and close the Punto Limpio.
- Answer a number of important questions relating to the management of the site and the fire of 17 July 2026.
- Provide copies of relevant policies, procedures and safety documentation where this can be done without prejudicing any ongoing police or judicial investigation.
We sincerely hope the Ayuntamiento will respond positively and take immediate action, making this petition unnecessary.
However, because we believe there is an ongoing public safety risk while the Punto Limpio remains accessible and contains combustible material, we believe it is responsible to begin gathering community support now.
If no satisfactory response is received by 10 August 2026, this petition will be formally presented to the Ayuntamiento and, if necessary, to the appropriate provincial and regional authorities.
Why This Matters
On 17 July 2026, a devastating wildfire occurred in the Punto Limpio in Árchez.
The fire spread rapidly, destroying land, damaging homes, and affecting residents, farmers and businesses in Árchez, and Cómpeta.
We recognise and thank the firefighters, INFOCA personnel, Guardia Civil, Protección Civil, local volunteers and members of the public whose dedication prevented an even greater tragedy.
Our petition is not about criticising those emergency responders.
It is about ensuring that every reasonable step is taken to prevent another such incident.
This Was Not the First Fire
Our concerns did not begin on 17 July 2026.
On 21 November 2025, a significant fire was observed at the Punto Limpio in Archez.
The Ayuntamiento was contacted by telephone and the caller was informed that the fire was "normal". A local resident nevertheless contacted 112, after which the emergency services attended and extinguished the fire.
Video evidence of this incident exists.
This earlier event raises legitimate questions about whether the potential fire risk associated with the Punto Limpio had already been identified and whether sufficient preventative measures were implemented afterwards.
Continuing Public Safety Concerns
According to information available to our community, the Punto Limpio continues to contain combustible material and remains freely accessible.
Whatever the eventual findings of the official investigations into the cause of the July 2026 fire, we believe there is one simple principle that should unite everyone:
No community should have to live beside a facility that may continue to present a preventable fire risk.
The safety of our residents, homes, farms, businesses and natural environment must come before convenience.
Questions That Deserve Answers
In our letter to the Ayuntamiento we have requested answers to a number of questions, including:
- Who had authorised access to the Punto Limpio on 17 July 2026?
- Who was in possession of the keys to the site?
- Were any Ayuntamiento vehicles or contractors present?
- What information was captured by the CCTV system?
- Has all CCTV footage been preserved?
- On what information was the Ayuntamiento's public statement of 20 July 2026 on Facebook based regarding the reported origin of the fire?
- What measures have been taken since the fire to reduce the risk of another incident?
We have also requested copies of relevant policies and procedures concerning:
- Fire safety.
- Waste management.
- Site inspections.
- Key control and authorised access.
- CCTV management.
- Emergency response.
- Health and safety.
- The day-to-day management of the Punto Limpio.
We have made it clear that we are not seeking information that would prejudice any ongoing investigation by the Guardia Civil, INFOCA or any judicial authority.
What We Are Asking For
We respectfully call upon the Ayuntamiento de Árchez to:
- Immediately close the Punto Limpio.
Fully secure the site against unauthorised entry.
Remove all combustible waste and any materials presenting a fire risk. - Publish the findings of any investigations that can lawfully be released once official enquiries have concluded.
Why Your Signature Matters
This petition is not about assigning blame.
It is about protecting lives.
It is about protecting homes.
It is about protecting farmers and local businesses.
It is about protecting our countryside.
It is about ensuring that no community has to experience another devastating wildfire if reasonable preventative measures can be taken today.
Whether you live in Árchez, Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida, elsewhere in the Axarquía, or simply care about the safety of these communities, your support matters.
Our Commitment
We sincerely hope the Ayuntamiento responds positively to our letter before 10 August 2026 and confirms that the Punto Limpio will be secured and closed.
If that happens, this petition will have achieved its purpose.
If no satisfactory response is received, we will present this petition, together with the signatures collected, to the Ayuntamiento and, if necessary, to the appropriate provincial, regional and national authorities responsible for environmental protection, public safety and local government oversight.
Our objective is simple.
We want action before another fire happens—not after.
