Build a pedestrian/cycle bridge from North Greenwich to Canary Wharf

The Issue

When the next Jubilee Line upgrade takes place, which should mean 36 trains per hour in 2021, there will be no more room on the line itself for additional trains. The current commute on the Jubilee line from North Greenwich is already seeing constant delays and further housing is due to be completed, and started, in 2019 and further ahead. Adding further weight to the already heavy passenger traffic on the tube. Something needs to be actioned now.

With major housing and revamp schemes coming to North Greenwich, Stratford, West Ham and Canning Town, it will create an impossible commute on this end of the Jubilee line. TfL admitted as much in a submission to the Royal Greenwich Council back in 2015, when the peninsula’s new plans were approved. They said: “Jubilee Line crowding is already an issue and is forecast to continue in 2031.” We are already seeing major problems and delays on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis.

A lot of North Greenwich’s commuters are heading only one stop west, to Canary Wharf, or can find alternative routes from there. We need to build a pedestrian/cycle bridge over the Thames to Canary Wharf. We know that this is possible as articles state that Architect Sir Terry Farrell suggested a low-level lifting bridge would meet all river requirements; for those travelling on the water as well as over.

The walk from North Greenwich to Canary Wharf currently takes 90 minutes, for able bodied persons, this is not acceptable to simply cross the river. The bridge is a must with the further development of North Greenwich and its surrounding areas and will give easy access to pedestrians. This will alleviate the current TfL service at rush hour.
