Climate Education For IL

The Issue

Our mission is  to ensure that all Illinois students (K-12) receive equity focused climate education in a way that empowers them to take action, adapt, mitigate their environmental impact and prepare for 21st century jobs.

What are we calling for?

Our goal is to champion a bill that creates a position at the Illinois Board of Education to help identify and disseminate  curriculum with teacher input. Curriculum should be equity-focused, age-appropriate, and solutions-based. It should be centered on meaningful local examples. The position should be funded in order to  ensure longevity and facilitate equitable implementation through teacher professional development.

Write or call your Representative (find your legislator here) to let them know that you support equity-focused, solutions-based climate education that prepares students for the green jobs created by the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act

What framework is currently available?

At least five state legislatures have passed bills that establish policies and/or funding for climate education curricula. These include California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, and Washington. New Jersey’s Climate Education Hub provides examples of curriculum resources that can serve as a starting point.
