The Issue

The Philippines faces a persistent and worsening problem with its urban drainage systems, particularly in rapidly growing cities like Metro Manila and Cebu City. Due to rapid urbanization, outdated infrastructure, and poor maintenance, many drainage systems are undersized, clogged, and unable to cope with heavy rainfall—resulting in frequent flooding, environmental degradation, and health risks like dengue which is common in the philippines.

The lack of integration and coordination among local government units further affects the efforts to improve drainage capacity and sustainability. Many areas also lack centralized sewerage systems, leading to the direct discharge of untreated wastewater into waterways, this is a serious health hazard especially for the children here in the philippines being left unattended when It’s raining heavily. Some of this children play on the water and can sometimes swallow it causing salmonella, leptospira etc.

The implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) are being considered, a more comprehensive, integrated, and technology-driven approach is urgently needed. Public awareness, regular maintenance, and stronger inter-agency coordination are essential to create resilient and sustainable drainage infrastructure across the country.
