The CCISD Board of Trustees approved to change the grading policies at CCISD to a PASS/FAIL grading system on Monday, April 6, during a special meeting.

The CCISD Board of Trustees modification states, "Under this modified grading system, daily grades that culminate in a 60% or higher average will constitute as a Pass and credit earned for the semester for students in grades 6-12. Grade level advancement/classification will be determined by the overall average of the first semester and the Pass or Fail indicators for the second semester."

There are many forms of motivation that students have with their studies. Some students like to challenge themselves to achieve the best grade possible and toward a better GPA. If students make good grades or show improvement from the first semester to the second semester, it can significantly improve their class rank and GPA, which can affect if they get accepted to college or not.

Many hard-working students are NOT IN FAVOR of the PASS/FAIL grading system.

The disadvantages of a PASS/FAIL grading system are:

  • There are no longer incentives to study harder or put more effort into assignments. Being "OKAY" is good enough.
  • The PASS/FAIL grading system does not accurately reflect student understanding of subject material.
  • Students will meet a lower minimum to earn credit in the class.

The CCISD Board of Trustees made a decision that negatively impacts high achievers. Is the PASS/FAIL grading system the MOST beneficial solution for ALL students? The CCISD Board of Trustees needs to change the grading modification making the PASS/FAIL grading OPTIONAL. Students should still get credit for the grades they earned in the third nine weeks, and the grades they are earning while remotely learning if it will benefit them. For those who are disadvantaged with remote learning, give them a choice to have pass/fail if it will benefit them. If this does not happen, and the pass/fail grading is put in place for every student, a lot of very hard working students will suffer.

We ask the CCISD Board of Trustees to make it a choice for students to have a grade or pass/fail for the second semester. Some colleges are offering that exact choice to their students. Please reconsider this modification to the CCISD grading system.

We are in uncharted territory right now with the pandemic, and we have to modify a lot of things to ensure education continues in the best possible way for our children. Please consider signing this petition to help ALL STUDENTS impacted by remote learning during this COVID-19 crisis.
