The Issue

Growing up in Brooklyn, I always cherished the moments spent at Coney Island Beach. My family and I would eagerly anticipate our beach trips—those sunny days of swimming, laughter, and picnics. However, more recently, my heart sinks every time we arrive to a shore littered with garbage, plastic bottles, and other debris.

The impact is profound and deeply personal. I constantly worry about the precious local wildlife, such as the whelk and horseshoe crabs, that call this place home. These creatures are essential to our ecosystem, yet they're at risk of ingesting harmful plastics or becoming entangled in debris. It's distressing to think that our negligence could drive them away or worse, put their lives in peril.

It's not just about the animals, though; families like mine are affected too. Imagine trying to enjoy a day at the beach, only to be greeted by waves bringing in garbage rather than seashells. The thought of swimming amidst trash is simply disgusting and saddening, tarnishing what should be a joyful experience.

We need to take action—and soon. Cleaning up Coney Island Beach isn't just about aesthetic appeal; it's about ensuring safety, protecting wildlife, and preserving our community’s heritage.  We only have one planet, let's use it wisely!

Consider this an open call to everyone who loves Coney Island and values its natural beauty. By addressing this issue, we can create a cleaner, safer environment for both the local wildlife and the families who make lasting memories there. Let's band together and protect what we love.
