Clean the Ganga River to prevent ocean pollution
The issue
During my research for a project on marine extinction, I was shocked to learn about the pollution crisis facing the Ganga River in India. The river, which holds immense cultural and historical importance, is now plagued by waste that flows directly into our oceans. I was sickened upon sight of it. This is a prominent cause of marine pollution and extinction, and it requires urgent attention. Seeing the condition of the Ganga inspires me to take action—not only because of the river’s significance but because the pollutants impacting it inevitably reach the ocean, endangering marine life globally.
The Ganga River, flowing through the heart of India, is victim to an alarming amount of litter. According to studies, approximately 1.2 billion pounds of plastic flow into the ocean from rivers worldwide each year, with the Ganga contributing significantly to this statistic. This is not just an environmental issue; it impacts human health and threatens the livelihood of those who depend on the river for fishing, agriculture, and fresh water.
The Government of India has taken steps towards cleaning up the Ganga, such as through the National Ganga Council and the National Mission for Clean Ganga. However, more must be done to support these initiatives and ensure their success. We propose increasing government funding, enhancing public awareness campaigns, and empowering local communities to join the collective effort in protecting this vital water resource.
Additionally, stricter regulations on waste disposal within industries situated along the Ganga, as well as regular cleanups and advanced waste management systems, could significantly reduce the volume of pollution entering the river. Community-led initiatives and educational programs about environmental conservation can also have a long-term impact on preserving the Ganga.
