Clean rivers

The Issue

The aggravation of the climate situation in the world has dealt many consequences to our environment; impacting biodiversity, public health, and local ecosystems. In terms of our local community, many factors such as waste and industrial pollutants have completely soiled the Riviere des Prairies. During the summer time, it is a popular place for people to swim and do various aquatic activities, not knowing that the same water they bathe in is contaminated.

We, the concerned residents of Pierrefonds-, urge you to take immediate action to improve the condition of the Riviere des Prairie to protect and maintain our local environment and public health.

We call upon you to:

Implement a comprehensive river clean-up initiative, including the removal of waste, plastics, and industrial pollutants.
Strengthen regulations and monitoring to prevent further contamination by holding polluters accountable.
Invest in natural infrastructure projects such as wetlands and riparian buffer zones to improve water quality and biodiversity.
Establish community-led programs that engage local residents, schools, and businesses in maintaining the cleanliness of the river.
It has been shown and proven that cleaner rivers can encourage outdoor activity, public well-being and the flourishing of ecosystems and biodiversity. Just as mentioned by American Rivers when they stated “A healthy river can be a community’s first line of defense against climate impacts, offering clean water supplies, cost-effective flood protection, safe places to recreate and stay cool, and a connection to culture.” In fact, large water bodies such as rivers act as carbon sinks (bodies of water that absorb CO2) which can effectively help fight climate change. These wetlands and healthy ecosystems help filter pollutants, keeping the water clean as well as regulating temperatures. Many communities in the world are struggling with the effects of floods, we especially feel it here in Pierrefonds-Roxboro. Wetlands are affective at absorbing water and hence reducing flood risks. Overall, wetlands and rivers help us adapt to climate events such as floods and droughts, reducing the overall impact of climate change.

Taking these measures will not only contribute to improving the changing climate situation but contribute to a healthier and more sustainable community for future generations.
