Clean and Restore Deer Lakes Park for Accessible Fishing

Clean and Restore Deer Lakes Park for Accessible Fishing
The Issue
I have fond memories of fishing with my family and teaching children the joys of angling at Deer Lakes Park in Russellton, PA. It's a special place where my non-profit, Trout & Tranquility, and the PA Fish and Boat Commission often host events to teach kids about fishing and instill a love for the outdoors. Unfortunately, as temperatures rise, the lakes become choked with lily pads and other plant life, rendering them unfishable and unusable for a significant portion of the year.
For many families and especially for disabled individuals, the middle and lower lakes at Deer Lakes Park provide one of the few accessible locations for fishing. The growing overgrowth is not only an inconvenience but a barrier to enjoying the park fully. I remember when these lakes had working fountains that kept plant growth at bay, and the waters were teeming with fish waiting to be caught. Now, they barely bubble and are overwhelmed with sediment.
By cleaning the lakes and installing functional fountains again, we can ensure these natural treasures are restored to their former glory. The transformation would not only benefit local anglers but also encourage outdoor activities, environmental education, and community bonding around the sport of fishing—which is crucial in fostering future stewards of our natural resources.
I'm reaching out to Allegheny County Parks and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the maintenance of these lakes. This includes not only removing excessive aquatic plants but also dredging sediment to restore water health and lake depth. Such efforts will ensure the lakes remain a viable, safe, and pleasant resource for all, particularly those with physical disabilities who rely on accessible fishing locations.
Together, we can revive the beauty and utility of the middle and lower lakes at Deer Lakes Park. I'm asking you to lend your support by signing this petition. Let’s bring back the joy and tranquility that fishing in these lakes once offered to families and individuals in our community.
