Do not renew contract with PLM Lake & Land Management Corporation (or any other spraying contractor) for the use of herbicides to remove seaweed (and other "aquatic nuisances") from the canals in Clay Township.

The Issue

We are against the contract renewal with PLM Lake & Land Management Corporation for the use of herbicides to remove seaweed (and other "aquatic nuisances") from the water canals in Clay Township.  These canals connect directly to the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair.  They parallel roads including:  Merrill Drive, Park Lane Drive, Riverside Drive, Aqua Isle Drive, Colony Drive, Audubon Street, Bluebill Road, Cardinal Road, Flamingo Road, and Anchor Bay Drive.  We know that these waterways are not solely used for boat traffic, but are also used for swimming, fishing, jet skiing, kayaking, and other water sports too.  Also, water from these canals can negatively impact homeowners' lawns, landscaping, and home gardens.  Overall, we see more harm on human and environmental health than help from the use of these chemicals and would prefer that alternative (and safer) seaweed removal methods be explored.

(Additional Information: Examples of chemicals used in 2013 and 2014 include - Tribune (Diquat dibromide), Cygnet Plus (Adjuvant), Captain (Chelated Copper), Captain XTR (Chelated Copper), and Nautique (Chelated Copper).  Examples of other chemicals on the original 2013 notice that could have been used include:  SeClear (Chelated Copper), Clipper (Flumioxazin), Aquathol K (Endothall), Hydrothol 191 (Endothall), Aqua Pro (Glyphosate)).
