Communities across the United States are grappling with the unregulated use of Kratom, a substance derived from the leaves of a Southeast Asian tree. This lack of regulation has led to widespread misuse and a growing number of individuals facing addiction. As a concerned member of my community, I have seen firsthand the devastation that can result from unchecked Kratom usage. It has impacted families, strained community resources, and endangered the wellbeing of individuals who are caught in the cycle of addiction.

Kratom and its active compound, 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7 OH), have been researched and found to possess opioid-like properties, leading to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms similar to those of controlled substances. Studies from reputable health institutes indicate that Kratom can be addictive, and there have been reports of health complications, including hallucinations, seizures, and even fatalities, attributed to its use. Despite these concerning findings, Kratom remains easily accessible, often marketed as a dietary supplement without any age restrictions or dosage guidelines.

The time has come for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take definitive action by classifying Kratom and 7 OH as Schedule II controlled substances. This classification would recognize the substance's potential for abuse.

Establishing Kratom as a Schedule II substance would not only help control its distribution but also fund necessary research into its potential medical benefits, allowing consumers to make informed decisions. This regulatory step would provide a framework to manage its use, preventing unnecessary harm and offering help to those already affected.
