Class ‘foid’ as gender harassment

The Issue

In recent years, the derogatory term "foid" – slang for "female humanoid" – has gained prominence in certain corners of the internet, particularly within communities advocating harmful ideologies against women. This term reduces women to mere objects, denying them their humanity and individuality. The UK Equality and Human Rights Commission has a pivotal role to play in safeguarding dignity and promoting equality for all citizens, including women who are often targets of online and offline abuse.

Incorporating "foid" into the scope of gender harassment would send a strong message against misogyny and discrimination. This action aligns with the UK government's commitment to creating a safer digital environment and upholding human rights. Statistics show that online harassment is predominantly aimed at women, with a report by Amnesty International revealing that 76% of women who experienced abuse on Twitter felt their anxiety increased due to online interactions.

Additionally, the Office for National Statistics reported that 1 in 3 women in the UK experienced some form of harassment. By classifying terms like "foid" as gender harassment, we can curb the spread of misogynistic language that fuels gender inequality and violence against women.

We propose concrete steps for the Equality and Human Rights Commission: firstly, to conduct a review of discriminatory terms and their impact, and secondly, to update guidelines and policies to explicitly recognize and address terms like "foid" as forms of gender harassment.

This petition is more than a request; it's a demand for acknowledgment and protection of women's rights. We urge the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission to lead this change for a more inclusive and respectful society. Please sign this petition to take a stand against misogyny and support gender equality.
