Help protect our rights to self expression on campus

My name is Lorelei. I’m a middle school student in Clark County, and I am petitioning the school board about an issue concerning appearance and self-expression. Other students and I have been dyeing our hair “unnatural” colors throughout the school year. Now the school administrators are requiring us to change our hair to colors that they consider “natural” and have set a deadline that occurs only six weeks before the school year ends. The school sent home a note stating that unnatural hair color has become a “campus distraction”. We have not been provided evidence of our hair colors being distracting nor were we given guidelines in the school charter about our hair. This leaves us in a position where we cannot know where they draw the line, and we believe that it is unfair to enforce a nonexistent rule with so little time left in the school year. Furthermore, it is our opinion that to enforce or create any rule about how we color our hair limits our right to self-expression outside of school. In response to the deadline they have given us to dye our hair back to “natural” colors, (with no definition of what they feel constitutes natural), we are petitioning the school and the district in the hopes of undoing this ruling. Please help us send the message that how colorful our hair is should be left for us (and our parents) to decide. Thank you for reading. -Lorelei
