CCSD Needs an Expanded and Comprehensive Sex Education Curriculum

The Issue

Students within CCSD deserve an expanded and comprehensive sexual education curriculum. As it stands, the current curriculum needs to be modernized and represent the diverse array of students that we trust the school system to educate.

There's so much that students don’t learn about that should be normalized in education which leaves them unprepared for the real world. Don't we want our students to understand themselves and one another? The spectrums of sexuality, romance, and gender aren’t discussed let alone infertility, intersex (individuals born with variations in sex characteristics), and how to build positive sexual relationships. Now more than ever, it is important to promote a curriculum that ensures the physical and mental well being of students. For instance, according to the CDC’s “Health Disparities Among LGBTQ Youth” report, LGBTQ youth are at the highest risk for risk factors across the board, including suicide contemplation which was reported at nearly 48%. For a district that could have nearly 12,000 LGBTQ students, an inclusive education could make a significant difference and save lives. With education comes normalization, and with normalization comes mitigation of these risk factors. To see others represented in education such as this helps promote a safe, positive, and diverse culture; more importantly, it shows students that they themselves are normal. Sex education is more than just the act and reproduction and it's time we recognize the importance of a comprehensive sexual education.

Within CCSD's standards as well as NRS 389.036 there is plenty of room to establish new units focusing on the gaps we have in our sex education curriculum. The opportunity is right in front of us! We can achieve the change we strive for! We can have more diverse and inclusive sexual education content, we can have a longer sex education unit at a minimum of 5 weeks, and we can have a more comprehensive sex education! All we have have to do is demand change!

Be a part of the change and help us achieve the education we strive for!
