Alloa Advertiser's campaign to #KeepSafeDrive

The Issue

Safe Drive, Stay Alive is a series of road safety awareness shows which reaches thousands of pupils from Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Falkirk every single year. The teenagers are transported from their respective schools to the Macrobert Arts Centre where they hear from a range of dedicated volunteers, including members of the emergency services and families who are still dealing with the impact of losing a loved-one in a road accident.

The programme was started in response to a relatively high number of people being killed or seriously injured on Scotland's roads. However, according to the group running the project - Central Safe Drive - there has been no road deaths among their target audience for the last six years.

Safe Drive, Stay Alive is free to all students and members of the public who attend. It costs around £23,000-24,000 to run each year. Previously, all three local authorities in central Scotland helped fund the week-long roadshows, but have since reduced, or completely withdrawn, their contributions. With the group now facing the prospect of raising all the money themselves, it is more likely that there will be no Safe Drive, Stay Alive programme for 2018.

The Alloa Advertiser recently launched a campaign to #KeepSafeDrive and ensure its important message continues to reach the young people in Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Falkirk.
