The Issue

For 38 years, dogs have been an integral part of my life. As a disabled veteran of the United States Army, I have experienced firsthand the healing and supportive nature of dogs. They've helped me navigate the challenges of daily life, offering companionship and emotional support that is both profound and invaluable.

However, the current restrictions on kennel licenses within our city limits make it difficult for me, and others like me, to provide temporary shelter and care for more than a few dogs at a time. This is not just about pet ownership; it's about therapeutic assistance and community service. There are numerous veterans and civilians alike who could benefit from having more accessible services provided by kennels within the city.

City ordinances often limit the number of animals one can keep, under the assumption that this mitigates potential nuisances or hazards. However, with proper regulation and permitted limited kennel licenses, we can create a system where licensed kennels operate responsibly, providing benefits not only to the animals but also enriching the community and supporting those who need animal-assisted therapy.

Data from the American Veterinary Medical Association highlights the physical and emotional benefits of animal companionship. Communities with accessible animal care services demonstrate enhanced wellbeing and improved mental health markers among residents.

By allowing limited kennel licenses, we can ensure that those in need of therapy animals have adequate support while maintaining community standards. This system can promote responsible animal care, provide more services to those in need, and help keep our city a compassionate environment for everyone.

Join me in urging our city officials to amend these restrictive ordinances. Together, we can clear the way for limited kennel licenses within our city limits, ensuring that animals continue to have a positive impact on the lives of people like me and others who rely on their incredible support.

I call upon my fellow citizens to sign this petition and show our city leaders that there is genuine support for this important cause. Your signature can make a difference in the lives of many, both human and animal.
