City University Of New York: Fix CUNY First

The Issue

In 2007, the City University of New York signed a contract with a big software company called Oracle for a suite of programs called CUNY First, which are designed to replace several of the CUNY schools' aging legacy systems.

CUNY First was deployed to hundreds of thousands of university students throughout New York City over the past several years. It is the only way for students to manage their academic careers, encompassing everything from daily classes to tuition and scholarships.

It was a great idea at the time, but the implementation has proven to be a step backward. Riddled with bugs, there's no shortage of people complaining about the software. Passwords have to be changed every semester, managing classes is difficult, and the software is beyond slow.

Oracle's press release says that CUNY paid $250 million, but several sources said that the actual amount was closer to $600 million. That's enough to cover tuition for 26,178 full time students at a four year CUNY college.

CUNY First will continue to be difficult to use, unless we say something. This is going to ruin the college careers of millions of students over the next few years. It's simply not fair for the corporate interests of Oracle to hinder your education

Please help us convince the city to work with Oracle and fix CUNY First. Please sign and share this petition.
