Save Whitehorse Centre, Save $70 Million

Save Whitehorse Centre, Save $70 Million

The Issue

The City of Whitehorse is going to demolish the beloved Whitehorse Centre, a vital resource for the performing arts community. In its place will be multilevel car parking complex, instead of parkland, and a $70 Million, 600 seat convention centre with exclusive dining facilities. The Council claims that this will be available for community groups. However, it is clear that there will be a price rise of at least $30 per ticket for such an elaborate and expensive building. This will price out pensioners, families, schools and scouting groups.

In 2020, when the COVID crisis is hurting people, small businesses and community groups, Whitehorse Council should not be building a white elephant that ratepayers can neither afford to pay for, nor visit. It may not even be possible to sit 600 people together safely for a very long time. There is no good reason for Council to proceed with this high risk, high environmental impact business venture at this time.

The Council should be supporting the community by building more accessible facilities across the City, rather than demolishing the Whitehorse Centre. Please sign this petition and contact your councillors before it is too late.
