Anchoring - Free False Creek East Basin - no more big boats
Anchoring - Free False Creek East Basin - no more big boats
The Issue
The east side of False Creek in Vancouver, BC, Canada is used by multiple paddlers and rowers as it is a safe place for users of all abilities to practice, race and simply enjoy the water. It is also easily accessible by transit, making it a popular destination for youth and those without cars. In the summer, boat owners anchor their boats in False Creek, turning the area into an obstacle course at the very least, so practices are disrupted and race organizing is a nightmare. Some of the boats also contribute significantly to the ongoing e-Coli problem. Up to 5500 paddlers at a time take part in dragon boat and other races, which are often disrupted, delayed or cancelled because boats are moored right on the race course. Boat owners are often impossible to contact ahead of time, as they have left their boat and travelled elsewhere. Sometimes boat owners (very few thank goodness) simply refuse to move. It's come to a point that we have to do something. False Creek is under the direction of Transport Canada, managed by the City of Vancouver. Help us make False Creek east in Vancouver accessible to all. Sign here or write to Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau (marc.garneau@parl.gc.ca) or Mayor Gregor Robertson and Council (mayorandcouncil@vancouver.ca).
