City of Vancouver please erect a permanent memorial for Janice Nicole Bryant

The Issue

31-year-old Vancouver resident and mother Janice Nicole Bryant was killed by gunfire outside her home on the afternoon of May 23, 2017. The homicide remains unsolved. Since this tragic loss Janice’s mother, family and friends have regularly attended to a memorial at the site of the shooting on the corner of St Catherines St and 7th Ave, to commemorate Janice’s life and shine a light on the injustice of her death. Recently, the memorial was demolished without authorization; carelessly destroyed without respect or reflection on the loss of Janice’s life.

We are petitioning the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Parks Board to build a permanent memorial for Janice Nicole Bryant and in remembrance of the many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women of BC . The site at St Catherines St and 7th Ave has become an important place of grieving and connection for those who loved her, as well as her neighbours and community that grieve the loss with them.  Her family has connected with Gitxsan artist to build a memorial bench in her honour. This, as well as gardens and arrangements maintained by Janice’s mother would serve in her honour. We want to see this site upgraded and protected from demolishment.
