Open the Holmes Aquatic Center in Full for Summer 2020

The Issue

The City of University Park, TX announced on 22 May 2020 that the Holmes Aquatic Center will not open until 1 July 2020 and will ONLY be available for reserved lap swimming at that time.

This petition proposes that: In light of the CDC's recent announcement that COVID-19 does not spread easily on surfaces and its statement that "There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water," these taxpaying citizens of the City of University Park, Texas request that the Holmes Aquatic Center open on or before June 15, 2020 and remain open for the duration of the summer season. These citizens request that the children's pool, splash pad and large pool open in the same manner as previous seasons: not only for lap swimming, as currently proposed by the City.

If social distancing is required by state law, these citizens request that the City of University Park convert the Rec Trac reservation system used for lap swimming reservations to use for general pool reservations.

These citizens acknowledge the City of University Park's statement that, "social distancing has severely impacted the ability to train and certify lifeguards and other staff," and are ready and willing to sign a waiver that the City and/or any other necessary parties are not held liable for any incidents that occur during the Summer 2020 season, and do not expect services such as the Snack Shack to be open.
