Water Crisis in Mamelodi East
The Issue
Imagine consistently being without water for 3 weeks? The City of Tshwane has let us the Residents of Mamelodi East down. We have had prolonged water outages with the most recent outage lasting 3 weeks.
The right to sufficient water is a Constitutional right in South Africa’s Bill of Rights. It places a legal obligation on the government to ensure that all people living in South Africa have the right to sufficient water.
As Residents of Mamelodi East we are concerned about the maintenance of our water systems and the security and physical controls at Mamelodi Reservoir 4, the main water supply in our area. The reservoir has been vandalised several times and the lack of security has made it possible for criminals to connect water illegally. It took the City of Tshwane 3 weeks to detect why we had no water in the area and we have had to use unsafe water sources in the interim.
The community does not feel safe drinking water from Mamelodi Reservoir 4. The fact that our water systems have been tampered with and that there have been illegal connections presents a huge risk for us. The water that our families are expected to drink could very likely be contaminated.
Please sign our petition to the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Cllr Randall Williams and help us fight for our Right to Sufficient Water.
- We demand transparency and information from the City of Tshwane with regards to the Water Crisis in Mamelodi East.
- We demand the resumption of safe and healthy drinking water that flows without interruptions in Mamelodi East.
- We demand that the City of Tshwane ensure that the water in Mamelodi 4 Reservoir is tested and that residents are given confirmation that the water is safe to drink.
- We are calling for the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane to investigate the Head of the Sanitation and Water Unit for his role in failing to deal with the water issue in Mamelodi East.
