Save the St. Pete Welcome Sign!

The Issue

Since 2012, the St. Petersburg Welcome sign has stood 75 feet tall welcoming millions of people to our beloved city.

St. Petersburg businessman Bill Edwards said he had always been bothered that there was no signage indicating arrival to St. Pete. He funded the construction for the $600,000 monument to welcome guests and residents alike and let them know they've arrived.

With construction of the new bridge, which will have 8 lanes and 4 tolls, the city is going to be taking our sign down, leaving no indication that we have arrived to St. Petersburg.

It is not clear as to what the city will be doing with the monument, but according to the Tampa Bay Times, not all of it will be saved.

Let's not let the city take away that gratifying feeling of going over the bridge and seeing that monument standing proudly. Wouldn't it be better to relocate the structure instead of ridding it completely?
