STOP THE SUPERIOR LANDFILL REZONING

The Issue

For decades, the citizens in West Chatham County have been forced to suffer through and deal with the awful stench, trashed roadways and broken asphalt caused by the Superior Landfill, the garbage trucks and the obvious refusal of its owner, Waste Management, to follow regulations. No amount of complaining, begging and pleading to Waste Management has brought any relief to our situation. To say the least, this has been daily torment to our lives.

Now, much worse, Waste Management is requesting the rezoning of their 847 ACRES TO HEAVY INDUSTRIAL. This would be detrimental to West Chatham County citizens. If the rezoning goes through, the City of Savannah will allow Superior Landfill to EXPAND IN HEIGHT AND WIDTH. And that’s exactly what they plan to do. We have their plans for expansion. This would INCREASE THE LANDFILL’S LIFE from less than 10 years that they have left now to up to 50 years or more. This would also give the landfill room to take in garbage from even more outside counties than they already do now. Then later on, they could expand even more. There will never be an end in sight if this rezoning goes through.

Not only would Waste Management expand their solid waste landfill, there would be NO LIMIT to what they could build on their property if rezoned to HEAVY INDUSTRY. With 847 acres, they would have plenty of room to build an INDUSTRIAL LANDFILL. Superior Landfill is already taking in other counties’ garbage, but can you imagine what it would be like if they were taking in toxic Industrial Waste from all those counties, as well. Citizens would have to endure breathing in even more dangerous chemicals in the air. The potential for worse waterways contamination and land pollution would greatly increase. The increased traffic of big trucks would cause major traffic congestion and damage to our roadways, not to mention the increased potential for deadly accidents.

If we stop the rezoning, that will stop the expansion and finally we will be able to see an end to our torment.

WE MUST STOP THE REZONING!       WE MUST STOP THE EXPANSION!

TELL THE CITY OF SAVANNAH CITY COUNCIL "NO REZONING!" of Superior Landfill, 3001 Little Neck Road, Savannah, Georgia

TO THE CITY OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA CITY COUNCIL

We, the undersigned, petition the City of Savannah, Georgia City Council to deny the rezoning of Waste Management’s 846.71 acres property at 3001 Little Neck Road, Savannah, Ga. from PDR-SM-CO & PDR-SL-CO to I-H. Rezoning to Heavy Industrial would be ever more of a detriment than it already is, as the rezoning would allow Waste Management to expand in height and width as spelled out in their current contract with the City and General Development Plan (GDP).

Rezoning will only open the door for more severe changes in the future. We do not want to expand the life of the landfill. We do not want to increase the smell and pollutants we breath. We do not want additional waste from other counties. We do not want more air, water, and environmental pollution and contamination. We do not want more industrial trucks on our roadways and road damage. We do not want toxic industrial waste as allowed under heavy industrial zoning.

WE DO NOT WANT EXPANSION. WE DO NOT WANT TO INCREASE THE LIFE OF THE LANDFILL. WE DO NOT WANT REZONING.
