Every year, about 80 billion pounds of food is thrown away and into the landfill. On average, landfill in the U.S. emits about 163 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere from just waste alone. When wasted food decomposes in a landfill, it creates methane gas which releases into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. Our goal is to educate the local community about food waste and to encourage them to change their wasteful behaviors. The purpose of our goal is to bring awareness about compositing. We want to educate the public on how to compost and ways to minimize individual food waste and how food waste impacts our landfill. We would like our family, friends, and the public to learn about composting and to find ways to minimize food waste because they impact our landfill. By doing this petition, we hope that this will spread knowledge of food waste with friends and family.
