Nelson Island Paddle Zone

Nelson Island Paddle Zone
The Issue
In May 2018 a Richland resident had the wonderful idea to open up the Columbia River to be a paddle zone. The Tri-City Herald wrote an editorial in support but the project stalled. Now we finally have progress! The Army Corps of Engineers, the Coast Guard, and Benton County have all agreed the project can move forward.
Nelson Island is east of Leslie Groves Park along the Columbia River. The channel the paddle zone is in is only 3 feet deep according to the Corps of Engineers nautical charts. This area is adjacent to the Leslie Groves swim area and is widely used as a paddle zone.
By eliminating motorized boating in this shallow channel the safely and enjoyment will be immediate. By being aware of the current use of the park while also thinking of the safety and benefits to designating this area, Richland could be forward thinking in it's planning for the new decade.
Today we need the community to urge Richland to put this on the Parks and Recreation plan for 2020. The City Council could work with the federal agencies that have already offered support. Please help us make the Nelson Island Paddle Zone a reality in 2020 for a safer, all access community area in Richland.
Our federal partners have already agreed to help with correct signage to alert motorized traffic and with demarking buoys the zone will be obvious and safe for all river users.
The time is now for the 2020 term. Sign and share today.
