Washoe County Bar Taproom Coalition started this petition to City of Reno and

Bars/Taprooms that do not have full kitchens in Washoe County remain closed despite a lack of evidence that our industry is a higher risk for the local spread of COVID-19 compared to restaurants and other industries. Bars/Taprooms that do not have full kitchens have the ability to meet or exceed the standards set forth for restaurants. These businesses have not been given a chance to demonstrate this ability because the industry has been unfairly targeted. It is a fallacy to assume that these businesses cannot adhere to strict standards simply because they do not serve food. If the Governor, City of Reno, City of Sparks, and Washoe County were serious about supporting this industry they would advocate for the industry and work with industry representatives to develop a solution. We have built a coalition of more than 30 bars/taprooms who have agreed to a set of operating standards as well as to hold one another accountable. The Washoe County Health District has failed to advocate for this industry at the COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force meetings despite saying they support our industry in media statements. Instead of being transparent about their decisions and closed door discussions they have in fact acted in contrast to their public statements and failed to communicate with industry leaders. Bars/Taprooms without full kitchens should not be treated differently from restaurants, especially because many restaurants allow consumers to drink alcohol whether or not they eat food. Having more options available to consumers actually spreads people out more, not less. The time has come to give this industry a chance to demonstrate their ability to contribute to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Without that chance many in this industry will permanently close.
