Increase Limit for the No. of Households that are Allowed Backyard Chickens in Red Deer!
The Issue
Recently, our family decided to get 4 backyard chickens. During this time of Covid-19, we thought it a good idea to be able to become more self-sufficient as a family, and give our children (4, 2 & 0) some pets to keep them occupied. Building a coop, run and caring for the birds became an educational project and welcome responsibility. We enjoyed waking up every morning to go visit the chickens and collect fresh eggs for breakfast.
After we adopted our chickens, we found out that we needed to apply for an Urban Chicken License, according to bylaw. We immediately applied and we were rejected. We were forced to give up our beloved pets. We were all very disappointed, after only having them for a week.
As of 2014, 'the maximum number of chicken licences that may be issued shall be one chicken license per one thousand (1000) persons based on the population of the City of Red Deer as determined in the most recent municipal census'. A person may have 4 hens maximum, and no roosters. Licenses are to be renewed each year. Without this, you will be fined a minimum of $100.
Red Deer has reached it's capacity, and many households have been put on a wait-list. Families who wish to become more self-sufficient by owning chickens (for eggs) are not allowed to do so.
Female chickens are wonderful creatures, and the quality of grocery store eggs do not come close to that of having your own chickens. They are calm-natured animals and not disruptive to neighbours.
Support local - your rights to raise animals humanely and grow your own FRESH food rather than relying on large food corporations.
Help us by supporting (sign and share) this petition to INCREASE the number of households that can have urban backyard chickens, THIS YEAR OF 2020!
